The Gothic church (1450 to 1452) was built by Abbot Johannes von Münsterdreisen and the knights Siegfried and Johann von Oberstein as the Church of St. Mary. In the Thirty Years' War the church was severely damaged by Spanish troops in 1632 and after the restoration it was burned by the French during the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689. The church stood in ruins, was rebuilt over the years and was completed with the last construction phase in 1720.
