In the Middle Ages this was the market place. In the past, there were often pillory at such places as "punitive tools". These have been widespread since the 13th century and were used to carry out punishments of honour. The pillory, in which the convicts were publicly paraded and exposed to the mockery and scorn of their fellow men, also served the cities as an external sign of jurisdiction.
