Monument to Charles V ,  To commemorate the visit to our city by Emperor Charles V in 1535, on his return from the victorious expedition of Tunis, this monument was erected in Piazza Bologni in 1631.
The bronze statue is by the sculptor Scipione Li Volsi who executed it in 1630. The statue was originally intended for Piazza Vigliena and represents the Emperor surrounded by laurel, dressed as a warrior, with an ancient armor and with a sword at the flank.
Charles V leans on a command stick with his left hand and with his right hand he swears allegiance to the Constitution and to the privileges he granted to the Kingdom of Sicily.
The statue is placed on a pedestal adorned with military trophies, the work of Giacomo Cirasolo and Luigi Geraci from 1631, the other decorations: an imperial double-headed eagle (the empire), the columns of Hercules (the empire beyond the Strait of Gibraltar), and the seven-headed hydra (the Lutheran heresy), are the work of Giovanni Travaglia from 1632.
