In connection with the first mention of Fechenbach in 1214, Collenburg was also mentioned for the first time. Walter von Schüpf is mentioned as the builder and owner, also called Walter de Colbo (after his ancestor Conradus de Colbo, the builder of the nearby Clingenburg in Klingenberg am Main and the Henneburg in Stadtprozelten).

The name Collenburg, or originally Collenberg, consists of the personal name Colbo (from Walter de Colbo) and the Middle High German word bërc for mountain or castle. The nickname Colbo derives from the mace that the inn family had in their coat of arms. The original castle name was later used for the name of the municipality of Collenberg. Walter de Colbo's son Walter is attested as a tavern of Limpurg in 1230/1234, since he had apparently previously had Limpurg Castle built near Schwäbisch Hall. Since then the family has called itself Schenken von Limpurg.

In the 13th century the castle became a feudal castle of the Prozelten Teutonic Knights in the hands of the Rüdt family. In 1483 the castle came to the archbishopric of Mainz as a feudal lord. In the 18th century the castle fell into disrepair.
