The brothers Cyril and Methodius, who came from Thessaloniki in the Eastern Roman Empire at the time, were Byzantine scholars and priests. They jointly carried out Christian missions among Slavic peoples in the 9th century, which is why they are called the Apostles of the Slavs. They created the first script for the Old Slavic language - the Glagolitic alphabet. Their work had a great influence on the cultural development of the Slavs. After their deaths, their students continued the missionary work among other Slavic peoples. In the Orthodox Church, they are venerated as saints with the attribute of being equal to the apostles. Pope John Paul II declared them patrons of Europe in 1980.
