The Fort Hill Earthworks Trail offers a unique blend of ancient history and natural beauty, winding through mature forests, open fields, and wetlands. You'll encounter towering ancient trees and cliff-lined gorges, with the impressive Fort Hill Earthworks, a 2,000-year-old hilltop enclosure, as a central feature. It's a journey through diverse ecosystems and historical significance, providing a peaceful escape into Ohio's past.
This easy 3.3-mile (5.4 km) hiking route involves just 151 feet (46 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes about 1 hour and 24 minutes. While generally accessible, some parts of the broader trail system, like the Canby's Mountain Lover Trail, feature unimproved creek crossings that can be tricky after rain. Parking is available, and visiting during summer can be ideal for drier conditions and exploring all sections.
What truly sets this trail apart is its combination of a significant natural preserve with one of North America's best-preserved ancient hilltop enclosures. Built by the Hopewell culture, the Fort Hill Earthworks span 35.3 acres, showcasing massive earthen-stone walls. The preserve also boasts one of Ohio's largest and oldest contiguous forests, home to over 800 plant species and diverse wildlife.
