The castle is first mentioned in 1358 and was originally owned by the von Hake family. In 1395 it was transferred from Corvey Abbey to the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. In 1420 the bishop of Hildesheim took it during a feud between him and the dukes. From 1433 to 1567 the castle was pledged by the dukes to the bishops of Hildesheim, who used it as a bridgehead on the left bank of the Weser. In the Hildesheim collegiate feud, the castle was conquered by the Bishop of Hildesheim in 1521 and won back in 1523 by Duke Erich I of Brunswick-Calenberg-Göttingen. In 1530 Grohnde became the official residence and later the state domain.
