Gordes - picture-postcard village overlooking the Luberon mountain range

Gordes is a small village, picturesquely situated on a rocky outcrop in the Monts de Vaucluse, overlooking the Calavon River. A truly imposing location on the southern edge of the Plateau de Vaucluse, allowing a breathtaking view of the rocks, meadows and small villages in the valley.

The well-known Hollywood film "A Good Year" was filmed here, and the silhouette of the town (certainly the most beautiful in Provence) can be found on many postcards. The actually beautiful old town center is correspondingly touristy, overpriced and overcrowded (well over 1 million visitors/year). Gordes is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. From the outside, we fully agree. However, the interior of the village is now so synthetic and exists purely for tourism that

But the high village of Gordes is described in all travel guides as one of the highlights of Provence with wonderful sights. Is a visit to Gordes still worthwhile or are you just falling into another tourist trap?

The Château de Gordes dates from the 11th century and is one of the symbols of the village. In the castle there is a tourist information and changing art exhibitions.

The Saint-Firmin church was completed in 170 and built on the foundations of an older 13th-century church.

The well from 1342 was the only water source for Gordes for a long time and is located on the southern forecourt of the castle.

Another highlight are the particularly narrow and narrow streets in Gordes, which can also be found in many other, less crowded, Provençal villages
