As you pedal past Castlegar Castle be sure to keep an eye out for the stone arch and arrow slits which are remarkably well preserved, given how the remainder has fallen into ruins. It is a Norman Castle built by the De Burgo (Burke) family, who also built Portumna Castle to the south east of here.
