The small monastery is located in a high valley at over 4,000 meters directly at the foot of Manaslu. Right next to the mighty lateral moraine of the Punggen Glacier is a plain that is used seasonally as pasture. From here you have a fantastic view of Manaslu and its subsidiary peaks, as well as the striking appearance of Himal Chuli (7,893 meters) in the south.

In the 1950s, the monastery on the edge of the glacier was destroyed by an avalanche, which also killed many residents. The locals, it is often reported, attributed this to the wrath of the gods. Because they believed that the disturbance on the "Mountain of Souls" was caused by the unsuccessful attempt by the Japanese to climb Manaslu the year before. The base camp is now at a different location, a little further north in a side valley of Manaslu -Glacier.

How the Punggen monastery crouches on the slope is worth seeing in itself. The wide plateau in front of it was also unbelievable. When the weather is nice, you have to have an impressive view of the snow-capped mountains here. On the other hand, we only had partial, no less mystical views when the clouds released individual peaks.
