The Catholic parish church of St. Augustine in Dettelbach, Lower Franconia, emerged from a former knight's castle. It is located in the center of Dettelbach's old town on the church square above the market. Today the church is part of the Deanery of Kitzingen in the Diocese of Würzburg.
The Augustinuskirche on the Kirchberg in the center of Dettelbach's old town is one of the older church buildings in the area. A wooden chapel was probably built as early as the 9th or 10th century. Since the populated area was limited to the mountain at this early point in time, the place of worship is likely to have been located almost at the same place as today's church. However, a church in Dettelbach was first mentioned in a document in 1295. At that time, the knight Hartung de Tetelbach donated an early mass for the church.
By the 13th century at the latest, Dettelbach had its own vicar, who received further support in the centuries that followed. In 1429 the benefice for the vicar had to be renewed, and in 1431 Caspar von Tettelbach added a middle mass, which was confirmed by Bishop Johann II von Brunn in the same year. From about 1460, Dettelbach temporarily became the seat of an archdeacon and thus the administrative center for many parishes. Kitzingen, originally the main town of the archdeaconate, soon adopted Lutheran teachings, so that Dettelbach remained a central town into the 19th century.

In the late Middle Ages, the right of presentation was held by the family of the Knights of Dettelbach. The initiative for the construction of today's church probably also goes back to her. As early as 1444, work began on building a new church. The mighty square tower still preserved today dates from this first construction period. Today's east choir was laid out as early as 1489. It was consecrated on August 11, 1489, as an inscription confirms. A few years later, construction of the vault began. The church, which still exists today, was completed by 1503, with the smaller round tower being added in 1578.
