Unlike many other city walls in the area, many of the former wall towers have been preserved in Dettelbach, even if their stock has shrunk. The complex is said to have originally consisted of 52 towers, possibly including the tops on the walls. By the middle of the 19th century, the number had shrunk to around 40. A low of around 30 towers was reached at the beginning of the 20th century. The towers are still under threat, especially at the remote points of the wall. In order to ensure their preservation, they are now being handed over to individual residents as heritable building rights. The wall tower at Südring 4 with the city park in front of it
A particularly large number of wall towers have been preserved along the eastern city wall, between the former Neutor and the Faltertor. Above all, the so-called Rössnerturm with the address Östliche Stadtmauer 3 symbolizes the typical development of the wall towers. Initially built purely as a defense tower, the tower did not have a half-timbered upper storey in the first centuries of its existence. Weapons for the defense of the city were possibly stored here. Only in the 19th century did the tower get the half-timbered top. By adding another storey, it could be used as a residential building. The attachments, some of which were placed on the round towers as rectangular structures, are typical of the eastern and southern parts of the Dettelbach fortifications and give the Dettelbach town fortifications their striking appearance. Rectangular superstructures can be found at the eastern city wall tower/Hirtengasse 12, at Südring 4 and 6. Smaller-scale interventions were made to the towers at Stadtgraben 2 and 4. The projecting hipped roofs, which can be found at Langgasse 24, for example, probably also date from the 19th century. In addition to the smaller towers used today as residential towers, two points that are important for the city's history have been preserved. The so-called Mainstockheimer Turm with the address Stadtgraben 6 is considered the oldest surviving remnant of the city fortifications and is said to date from the middle of the 15th century.
