If you love waterfalls — or stairs — it's well worth making the steep hike to an overlook of Rainbow Falls, a towering column of water that plunges through the lush rainforest greenery on its way to the sea.

Some hikers will return to the main trail and continue past the falls, at which point the trail becomes the Institute Falls Trail. This, in turn, eventually connects with the North Wrangell Trail leading into the alpine high country and two public shelters. However, only hikers who are well-prepared for rapidly changing weather, wildlife encounters, and remote conditions should tackle the extended trails.
