Winegrowing in the Ortenau region is closely intertwined with the history of Staufenberg Castle – as is that of the noble Margrave of Baden.
The castle was built in the 11th century by the famous ducal house of the Zähringen, the ancestors of today's Margraves of Baden – making it a proud age of almost 1,000 years. The castle's name is derived from "Stauf," which in Old High German means "conical mountain." An apt description of the over 380-meter-high Staufenberg.
The earliest reference to winegrowing dates back to 1366.

In 1693, Ludwig Wilhelm, Margrave of Baden, the "Turkish Louis" and godson of the Sun King, was able to reacquire the castle. In 1832, it was converted into a "romantic" castle in keeping with contemporary tastes, and visitors can still find this "romanticism" today.
