The Rott has its origins in a moor area north-west of Thann. First flowing in a southerly direction, the Rott turns north in a wide arc and flows along the western outskirts of Großkarolinenfeld. Here it passes under the Munich–Rosenheim railway line. For the next few kilometers to Friesing, the Rott flows roughly parallel to the wide valley of the Inn through a valley that cuts up to 20 m into the landscape.
