Like most of the ponds in this area, the Obere Kellerhalsteich is a mining pond and was created by miners in the 17th century. It belongs to the Upper Harz water shelf and is therefore a World Heritage Site. Today it is used to supply the city of Clausthal - Zellerfeld with drinking water.
