The Siegsdorf mammoth was found in the 1970s in a surrounding valley by a student. After keeping his find secret for more than 10 years and repeatedly digging it himself, he published his find in the mid-1980s. The subsequent professional excavations not only brought to light parts of the mammoth skeleton, but also of cave lions, cave bears and other prehistoric animals that are exhibited in the mammoth museum. The story of the finder is also curious. He first founded his own Mammutheum, which was dissolved a few years ago. Eventually he migrated to Paraguay, where he was tortured and murdered along with his daughter.

In addition, the museum has a geological focus with a slightly older film about the formation of the earth. Overall very nicely prepared and the skeletons are an absolute highlight. Admission is free with a Chiemgau card (e.g. from Ruhpolding or Inzell), otherwise the 10 euros are a steep price.
