The Siegsdorf mammoth was found in the 1970s in a surrounding valley by a student. After keeping his find secret for more than 10 years and repeatedly digging it himself, he published his find in the mid-1980s. The subsequent professional excavations not only brought to light parts of the mammoth skeleton, but also of cave lions, cave bears and other prehistoric animals that are exhibited in the Mammoth Museum.
