Magnus was killed between 1116 and 1118. The kirk was built some twenty years later, after he was declared a saint.

The bell-tower originally stood 20 metres high and acted as a beacon.

The spot offers magnificent views to the North isles, and West across the sound to the terraced hills of Rousay.
