The city walls of Dubrovnik are the most impressive sight of the Dalmatian coastal city and at the same time its landmark. Se one of the most beautiful and best preserved city walls in all of Europe! Together with the historic old town, this gigantic wall from the Middle Ages is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and you should not miss a visit to this fortress on any trip to Dubrovnik.
The imposing city walls of Dubrovnik date back to the 8th century. However, it owes its current appearance to further construction work that began in the 12th century and continued until the 17th century. The earthquake of 1667 could hardly cause any damage to this thick stone wall.
The city wall is 1.5 to 6 meters wide and at its highest points it is around 25 meters high. But the entire defense system does not just consist of this one wall. Numerous towers, three fortresses, bastions, several moats, watchtowers and two drawbridges are also part of this gigantic complex.
