During the Napoleonic wars of liberation, the existing sacred building was destroyed by the French in the spring campaign of 1813. The teacher and sexton Johann Friedrich Simon campaigned for the church to be restored between 1828 and 1830. It was demolished down to the foundation walls below the lower edge of the window and rebuilt from bricks in the classical style, but without a tower, according to plans revised by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
