In 1976, the Great Tangshan Earthquake hit Tianjin. It’s believed to be the most devastating earthquake in the 20th century by death toll, and it came at a turbulent time in China, leading to even worse loss of life. The memorial in Tianjin is very famous, featured in many movies and TV shows in China. It was built around the same time as many other, very distinctive, statues in the city—of foreign-looking, curvaceous women in tight dresses. One of them is at the memorial, along with the standard soldier saving kids and a worker.
