    Hiking

Bealach na Fèithe is the top of the pass that links Loch Stack to the west and the Strathmore River to the east. Easy to follow trails lead up and over the Bealach which sits beneath Sàbhal Beag. This part of the trail accounts for a large section of the Sutherland Trail (linking Lochinver with Kyle of Tongue). Due to its remote location, there are a few nesting golden eagle pairs in this area so remember to look up!

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical distance and elevation gain for a walk to Bealach na Fèithe?

While Bealach na Fèithe itself is a pass at approximately 450 meters, the full historical drove road route is about 20 kilometers long. The elevation gain depends on your starting point, but the path gradually ascends to the pass from either the west (near Loch Stack) or the east (from Glen Golly).

How long does it typically take to complete the Bealach na Fèithe walk?

The time required depends on the specific route taken and your pace. For the full 20-kilometer historical drove road, hikers should plan for a significant portion of the day, likely 6-8 hours, especially considering the remote terrain and potential for stops to enjoy the views.

Is Bealach na Fèithe suitable for families with children?

The path is primarily suited for pedestrians and generally easy to follow. However, due to its remote location and the overall length of the full route, it might be challenging for very young children. Families with older, experienced hikers may find it enjoyable, but consider shorter sections or alternative routes if hiking with younger children.

Are dogs allowed on the Bealach na Fèithe trails?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails around Bealach na Fèithe. However, as this is a remote area with potential for livestock and wildlife (including nesting golden eagles), it is crucial to keep dogs under close control, preferably on a lead, to protect both your pet and the local environment.

What are the parking options near the Bealach na Fèithe trailhead?

Access typically begins near the A838 road, about 0.5km north of Achfary, at the bridge over the river flowing into Loch Stack. Parking facilities in this remote area are limited and often informal. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, and to park responsibly without obstructing access or gates.

Are there any public transport options to reach Bealach na Fèithe?

Public transport to this very remote part of the Scottish Highlands is extremely limited. There are no direct bus or train services to the immediate vicinity of Bealach na Fèithe. Visitors typically rely on private vehicles to reach the trailheads.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the Bealach na Fèithe trails?

The trails are described as easy to follow, forming part of a historical drove road. You can expect a mix of grassy paths, potentially boggy sections depending on recent weather, and a track that gradually improves as it descends towards Gobernuisgach Lodge. The terrain is rugged and typical of the Scottish Highlands.

What are the best viewpoints or natural features along the Bealach na Fèithe route?

From the pass itself, you'll experience expansive views of the surrounding rugged landscapes, linking Loch Stack to the west and the Strathmore River to the east. The journey through grassy glens and past serene lochs offers continuous natural beauty. Keep an eye out for nesting golden eagles, a notable wildlife feature of the area.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options nearby?

Bealach na Fèithe is located in a very remote part of Sutherland. There are no immediate amenities like cafes or pubs directly at the trailhead or along the route. The nearest services would be found in small villages or towns further afield, such as Altnaharra or Tongue, so plan to be self-sufficient with food and drink.

Is Bealach na Fèithe suitable for a winter hike?

While possible, winter hiking in the Scottish Highlands, especially in remote areas like Bealach na Fèithe, requires significant experience, proper winter gear (including navigation tools, ice axe, and crampons), and careful monitoring of weather conditions. Snow and ice can make the trails much more challenging and dangerous. It is generally recommended for experienced winter mountaineers only.

What should I wear for a walk on Bealach na Fèithe?

Given the changeable Highland weather, layering is key. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Always carry a hat, gloves, and extra warm layers, even in summer, as conditions can change rapidly.

Are there any circular routes available around Bealach na Fèithe?

The Bealach na Fèithe is primarily a pass on a linear drove road. While you can walk sections as out-and-back routes, a full circular route directly encompassing only the pass is not common. Hikers often integrate it into longer linear treks like the Sutherland Trail, or plan a return journey along the same path.
