This building dates back to the 15th century. In 1630 pastor Petrus Purmerent bought a house at 113 Hoge Gouwe and furnished it for prayer meetings. This hidden church, dedicated to John the Baptist, grew over the years into what is now the Old Catholic Church. As long as the complex served as a hidden church, it was forced to be hidden behind a row of houses.
