Cedar Gorge is a landmark of the Smoky Hill River Basin, which was dammed to create the Cedar Bluff Reservoir in 1963 following droughts in Kansas in the 1930s. The reservoir was used for irrigation for 15 years and then shut down to prevent overuse – now its prime function is recreation.
