The origin of the town and its name is attributed to the existence of a house in the middle of the mountain, whose first inhabitants dedicated themselves to charcoal for sale, or piconcillo. Around the town, thirteen ancient towers or castros have been located, fortresses and houses of primitive settlers, the most relevant being the so-called Plaza de Armas de Picón Viejo. As for its heritage, it is worth noting the Church of El Salvador, from the 15th century, the Hermitage of San Isidro, and the House of the Town Hall from the 16th century.
