There is no precise written evidence about the structure or structures and the interior design of our earlier predecessor churches. However, parts of today's outer walls are made of fieldstone masonry, which indicates a massive previous building. Finally, there are records from the years 1669 to 1712 on the condition of the building, which also indicate a brick church (Chronik Göhrke, page 10). In any case, the church had become so dilapidated by this time that a new building became necessary in 1713. The outline of the church building is still there today. The new building in 1713 took place as a baroque hall church. Of course, there were also some renovations for this “new church” in the time that followed. and the extensive renovation in 1968. Before the new building in 1710, a wooden, free-standing bell tower with three bells had been erected in front of the west side of the church, which hung there until 1917 (melting down) and were only replaced by three new steel bells in 1922. The church tower burned down completely in 1978 and was then rebuilt in 1979, also in timber construction. The three bells also fell victim to the fire, so three new bronze bells were added to the new tower. Source: johanniskirchengemeinde-eschede.de/Unsere-Kirche/geschichte

The Evangelical Lutheran St. John's Church in Eschede is a historic church building. A church in the area was first documented in 1490. The current building dates from 1713 and was built in the Baroque style. Its hall-like construction with a five-sided chancel is characteristic. Particularly striking is the richly decorated pulpit altar with columns decorated with vine leaf motifs.

A distinctive feature is the freestanding wooden bell tower, typical of churches in the Lüneburg Heath region. It was completely destroyed in a fire in 1978. The bells that fell can be seen next to the church today. The tower was faithfully rebuilt just one year later.

A stamp is available at the church for pilgrims on the Way of St. James. It is available at the town hall during the week and in a box at the church on weekends.
