The Lötscher Schanze was located here on the western shore of Lake Breyeller at least since the early modern period. Formerly a peninsula surrounded by bodies of water, it is now part of a swampy forest on the lake shore. Schanzen served to "entrench" the civilian population from passing armies or mercenary troops. Many were created during the 80-year war.
