Old historic town hall of Warendorf on the market square. This is also the meeting point for the tours of the town.

The historic town hall at Warendorfer Markt dates back to 1404. This year one of the major city fires devastated large parts of the city. Among other things, the parish church of St. Laurentius and the town hall with all its contents fell victim to the flames. Like all houses in the city, the church and town hall were wooden houses with a thatched roof until 1404.

Since the damage caused by the fire was like a catastrophe - not only all the furniture, but especially all the documents documenting the city's rights were burned - the town hall, which was built in the years after 1404, was intended to withstand later city fires thanks to its design. The city fathers built the town hall next to the parish church, the first stone house in the city. The walls, which are still impressive today, were in fact unable to prevent later fires, but the town hall stubbornly withstood them. The installation of document safes that still exist in the historic council chamber made it possible to prevent fire damage like that of 1404 from recurring.
