The city's landmark: The Roman Gate, also known as the Vienna Gate. The Vienna or Roman Gate in its current form dates from the 16th or 17th century. Remains of the late antique east gate have been preserved up to the second floor. The medieval gate tower in the middle is flanked by two slightly lower horseshoe towers.

The Roman Gate is one of the oldest buildings in Austria - the porta principalis dextra of Augustiani's Roman equestrian fort. The horseshoe-shaped defensive towers have existed for around 1,700 years. Later it housed the guard rooms for the gate and night guards.
Kriemhild passed through this gate on her journey to King Etzel; this event is described in two verses of the Nibelungenlied.
