Harperrig Reservoir was created in 1860 as part of a scheme to create a safe and reliable supply of drinking water for Edinburgh. The dam was raised in 1890 to provide a more reliable source of water to the mills downstream.
The reservoir is known to be populated by otters as well as several species of wetland bird and the rare stonefly.
