This monumental complex has its origins in the 14th century, but it had its heyday in the 16th century. In the year 1542 King Carlos V granted it the category of Royal. It is said that an apparition of the virgin prompted the construction of a first hermitage, now disappeared and whose place is occupied by the hostelry.

The current buildings correspond mainly to the 16th century, and Gothic elements were added to the temple in the 17th and 18th centuries.
