If you look at meadow valleys and valley flood plains, you will usually find that due to the leveling, adjustment of the landscape and the expansion of the water bodies, for example, flood basins, floodplain ponds, oxbow lakes, flood zones and wet meadows have largely disappeared. The living communities that depended on the existence of such structures have also disappeared. The ecological improvements implemented for the Weipersgrund and the Steinerbachtal are therefore predominantly (re)wetting measures that compensate for these deficits in waterlogged areas and damp depressions, temporary and permanent still waters, as a result of hydraulic engineering interventions in the past, within the Water system should at least partially compensate.

In an exemplary cooperation from December 2005 between the nature and environment working group, E.ON Ruhrgas, the city of Braunfels, the Naturlandstiftung Lahn-Dill-Kreis e.V. and HGON (Hessian Society for Ornithology and Nature Conservation e.V.) - over the necessary compensatory measures - additional small habitats, such as ponds and damp sinks, created. All this in the wake of the construction of a long-distance gas pipeline through the water system of the Weipersgrund between Braunfels Neukirchen and Altenkirchen. The animal and plant world should be stabilized and dynamized after this significant intervention in an ecologically highly sensitive stream system with different, valuable biotope types. In addition, an educational trail was realized. The nine thematic boards deal with valuable biotope types, geology and local history in the Weipersgrund and Steinerbachtal.
