It is the largest municipality in the canton of Diekirch with 8735 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2018). Together with the communities Bettendorf, Colmar-Berg, Diekirch, Erpeldingen and Schieren Ettelbrück forms the core of the Nordstad. This region is next to the cities of Luxembourg and Esch on the Alzette as the third pole of development of the Grand Duchy.
At Ettelbrück the rivers Alzette, Sauer and Wark flow together.
