Montacute House is a wonderful Elizabethan mansion surrounded by manicured gardens. The house is one of the few surviving unchanged examples of Elizabethan architecture and is built in medieval Gothic and Renaissance Classical styles.

It's not known who the architect was, although it is thought to be William Arnold, a local mason. The house was constructed with Ham Hill stone.

Today, the house is managed by the National Trust and open to visitors. It's featured as a filming location in various films such as Sense and Sensibility. The house is open from 11am until 4.30pm. Entrance costs £14 per adult.

Open 10:00 - 17:00 every day although some areas may close a bit earlier or later seasonally.

Bike bars and tables at the far end of the car park near the entrance to Mantacute House make a nice refreshment stop.
