Juniper heaths stand on dry, nutrient-poor, mostly remote and steep locations that rarely allow any other use than grazing. They were created in the last centuries by sheep and goat grazing or cattle grazing. The browsing by sheep, goats and cattle has kept all tasty plants short. Prickly plants such as juniper, silver thistle, pasque flowers or poisonous milkweed were spared by the sheep.
