The picnic area is a great spot from which to access the trails in Shingobee Recreation Area. For winter activities, the parking lot a hlaf mile up the road offers better access to the sledding hill and chalet.

The word "Shingobee" translates to the Ojibwe word for local pine, cedar and spruce trees.
