Alcántara means “the bridge” and not in vain, next to this town close to the Portuguese border, there is its famous Roman bridge over the Tagus River. It was declared a National Monument in 1924 and is over 70 metres high. It dates back to the 2nd century AD and its size and excellent state of conservation make it a must-see place.
