The Ems (Latin Amisia; Westphalian iems, Northern Lower Saxony and Dutch Eems, Sater Frisian: Oamse) is a 371 km long river to the North Sea in northwest Germany.

After the Weser, it is the second longest river that rises in Germany and flows into the sea.

The Ems rises in the Senne near Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock in the Westphalia region, flows through the district and the town of Gütersloh and through the Bay of Westphalia in a northwesterly direction roughly parallel to the Teutoburg Forest and from the state border with Lower Saxony, between Rheine and Salzbergen, then in a northerly direction to the North Sea.

From the Dollart, the Ems forms the partly disputed border with the Dutch province of Groningen.

It flows into the North Sea about 27 kilometers northwest of Emden between Pilsum and Eemshaven.
