Government Peak stands at 10,178 feet and is one of the shortest peaks in the Jarbidge Mountains. This is not to say that the views are any less spectacular than its neighbors; you get fantastic views from summit of prominent Mary's River Peak to the South, Cougar Peak to the northeast, the striking Matterhorn to the north, as well as generally great panoramic views of the entire mountain range. For those completing the Jarbidge Traverse south to north Government Peak is the first one you summit. The Jarbidge Traverse is a serious endeavor for experienced hikers only who are comfortable with covering long distances over exposed alpine terrain, some scrambling, and navigating along trails that might be faint to non-existent at times. Please use good judgement about your own ability and comfort-levels before attempting Government Peak and/or Jarbidge Traverse.
