One of my favourite rides! Certainly needs an off-road bike. There's loose gravel to start, fairly flat, then it gets more rutted and steeper by the reservoir/shooting range (don't be alarmed if you hear gun shots, it's only target practice! I think!) Then it levels out for a bit before getting really steep towards the end. If by then you've still got the legs, head right where the chalk lane becomes tarmac and cycle up the path to the top of the Trundle (an Iron Age hill fort). You will be rewarded by fantastic views as your legs recover ready for the exhilarating downhill run!
