As most hikers stop their hike at Volcano Lake I can highly recommend that you keep going on the Mountain Mine Trail. Not because there's that much 'mine' action to see, but because the views open up on most parts of the trail and they are truly magnificent.

This is a local favorite for a reason and many hikers come back here. Near the end of the trail you'll get close to the Sierra Buttes and their immense size will humble you.
