Piazza Ferrarese owes its name to a trader from Ferrara, Stefano Fabri or Fabbro, owner of several properties in the same square, who moved to Bari in the seventeenth century and also left his mark in the construction of the loggia of the Palazzo del Sedile.
Overlooking the Imperatore Augusto seafront, facing the old port, the square is bordered on the right by the building of the former fish market, built in 1840, and by the access ramp to via Venezia; on the left by the current Sala Murat, a former food warehouse, and by the apses of the church of Vallisa; instead, the Starita palace, built on the remains of an ancient Arsenal, forms the background.
It has always represented one of the access points to the old city, which extends from the Piazza Ferrarese-Piazza Mercantile axis to the Norman-Swabian castle through narrow streets, alleys and wide streets.
During the recent restoration work, which involved not only the square but also the surrounding buildings, a short stretch of the ancient Via Appia-Traiana, built by the Romans in the early 2nd century AD, came to light.
