Legend has it that this lake arose as a result of a divine punishment. The inhabitants of the town that was under its waters denied bread three consecutive times to a beggar, who was none other than the Virgin. As punishment, he caused the waters to flood the town, which disappeared. In commemoration of that catastrophe, the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Lago was built.
