This fort, situated at the Hook of Holland, was build in 1881 to protect the 'Nieuwe Waterweg', the gateway to the harbour of Rotterdam. Being qualified as very modern in 1881, due to the three armored gun turrets which operated with hydraulic power, was already outdated in 1900. This was mainly caused by the rapid developement of new battleships at that time. The fort also had an ability to block the entrance with mines. The fort remained, however, in service until the Second World War. After some fighting during the German invasion in may 1945, it was used by the Germans as a part of their Atlantic wall. After the war it was used by the Royal Netherlands Navy, first as military barracks, later as a supply facility, before being abandoned in 1978. The location is currently owned by a commercial party for events, exhibitions and wedding parties.
