Piet Hein was born in 1577 in Delfshaven, which is located near Delft, as the son of the skipper Pieter Corneliszoon Hein (-1623) and Neeltgen Claeszdochter. Little is known of Piet Hein's youth, except that he apparently learned to read and write and that he had three younger brothers, Jacob, Simon and Cornelis, who would all become merchants. In 1598 he was imprisoned with his father in Spain. Hein was deployed as a galley slave (rower) in the fleet of Ambrosio Spinola, located at Sluis. He was not released until 1602 during a prisoner exchange.

Pieter Pietersen Heyn, usually referred to as Piet Hein (Delfshaven, November 25, 1577 - June 17, 1629, Gregorian calendar) was a Dutch lieutenant admiral and West India Company commander. He is best known for the conquest of the Spanish treasure fleet in 1628, but he himself felt that he received too little recognition for his earlier achievements.
