The Sint-Laurentius Church, a beautiful example of neo-Gothic architecture, was built between 1903 and 1904 by the renowned Amsterdam architects Cuypers and Stuyt. With an impressive height of 64 meters, this church is a real eye-catcher.

Within the walls of the Sint-Laurentiuskerk you will find a rich collection of works of art. Among the showpieces is a Sedes Sapientiae from the 14th century, a masterpiece that symbolizes the wisdom of the Virgin Mary. Moreover, there are also six late Gothic statues that enchant visitors with their craftsmanship and historical significance. Another notable feature of this church is the presence of unique stained glass windows, created by the talented artists Ladon and Oserrath. There is also a beautiful pulpit from the 18th century.

The Sint-Laurentius Church opens its doors to visitors every day, except on Sunday afternoons and during church services. Moreover, it is also possible to arrange a guided tour, where you will have the opportunity to learn more about the history and meaning behind the various works of art in the church.

The neo-Gothic St. Laurentius Church in Hamont had at least two predecessors. There is a Romanesque church, which was demolished in 1437. The tower, made of marlstone, remained standing until 1851, but was then also demolished. In dangerous times, it served as a shelter for the population. Little is known about the construction of the subsequent Gothic church, but in 1445 the altar stone of St. Laurentius was consecrated. The Romanesque tower fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1851, after which the tower was rebuilt and the Gothic church was enlarged. Eventually, plans were implemented to build a new church on the site of the old one. On 18 June 1903, the foundation stone was laid and many peddler families, including the Simons family, made donations to purchase the church furniture. The church was a modified design by Joseph Cuypers and Jan Stuyt. The Sint-Laurentiuskerk is a neo-Gothic cruciform basilica with a wide central nave and remarkably narrow side aisles. The square tower has a remarkably high spire between four corner turrets. At the top is a gallery and the spire is adorned with a crown. The church is sometimes referred to as the "cathedral of the north" and used to be a place of pilgrimage for Saint Laurentius.
