The Augustinian monastery of Sant'Antimo is located about 10 km south of Montalcino, off the beaten tourist track. The abbey was founded by the Benedictines in the 8th century. According to legend, the monastery of Sant'Antimo was founded at the instigation of Charlemagne. The church building, which began in 1118, is architecturally based on the monasteries in Burgundy. For example, the ambulatory and the secluded location of the famous French monastery of Cluny. The original Benedictine monastery was closed in 1462.
