Tips

  • A Baroque building built between 1685 and 1689 according to the plans of Georg Dientzenhofer with the layout of a cloverleaf.
    The new ceiling paintings show above the high altar god father, who is worshiped by the spiritual and secular estates. The image of God and the Son represents the redemptive act of Jesus Christ for man, and the third ceiling fresco contains a representation of the bodily and spiritual works of mercy.
    Every year on Ascension a special service is celebrated. In front of the main altar stands the figure of the resurrected Savior on a festively decorated table. After a prayer, the Savior "visibly" ascends to the sounds of the song "Praise the Lord" for all. Afterwards, the "small Kapplfest" takes place on the forecourt, where Father's Day is celebrated extensively by hikers, cyclists and many more.On the Sunday after Whitsun, the Trinity Sunday, the Kapplkirche celebrates its "name day". After the divine service, the "big Kapplfest" is celebrated with brass band music and many goodies.In 1979, Max von der Grün said:
    "A miraculous sight, one steps out of the spruce forest into a clearing;
    lonely and abandoned stands a round church with three towers.
    A place of pilgrimage!
    Only boundless piety could produce such testimonies. "

  • The origin of this pilgrimage church goes back to the time when the Waldsassen monastery was built around 1133.
    Cattle herders attached a picture of the Holy Trinity to a tree trunk, which was soon credited with miraculous activity.
    A wooden chapel was built to protect the picture. Abbot Daniel did justice to the growing number of pilgrims around 1150 by building a worthy pilgrimage church.
    It was destroyed in the Hussite Wars and the Landshut War of Succession, but the devout population rebuilt it.
    When the Protestant faith also entered the abbey country around 1560, the church fell into disrepair.
    Only after the recatholization and after the suffering of the Thirty Years' War did one think of a new building. The current building was built between 1685 and 1689.
