The Gelfhorn Welfenschloss dates back to the Renaissance and served Duke Franz of Brunswick and Lüneburg as a residence. The castle houses the historical museum with exhibits on prehistory, prehistory, urban development and natural history. A look into the castle chapel is always worthwhile. Duke Franz of Brunswick and Lüneburg, a pioneer of Protestantism, resided from 1539 to 1549 in the Gifhorn Welfenschloss. In 1547 he had a castle chapel built. It is one of the first sacred buildings in northern Germany, which were built especially for the Protestant worship. The castle chapel was recently renovated and can be visited during a visit to the historical museum in the castle. A central theme of the exhibition is the history of the Gifhorn Welfenschloss. Fragments of noble glasses, expensive ceramics and magnificent stove tiles give an impression of the courtly splendor of this time. The museum, which is divided into five sections, gives the visitor an insight into the historical development of the southern heath Gifhorn from prehistoric times to the present day. The prehistoric collections show the transition of the way of life of humans from nomadizing hunter-gatherer to sedentary farmers. The emergence and development of urban settlements based on the example of Gifhorn are presented in the urban history department. Three ways of living, living and working, which are particularly characteristic of the 19th and 20th centuries, give an impression of the social changes that were initiated by the industrialization process. In the attic of the commander's house, the museum department "Animal and Landscape" is housed. Numerous fossils shed light on the evolution of the Earth and its creatures in general and the landscape of this region in particular. In vividly designed showcases with numerous preparations, the wildlife of this region is presented.
